感谢信，英文中称为 letter of thanks或letter of gratitude。顾名思义，就是写信人因得到某人或某单位的帮助、支持或关心而向对方表示感谢的信件。书写时语言要真诚感人，表达感激时要恰到好处，切忌过于夸张、让人心生虚伪之感。
一般来说，在考研英语中，感谢信主体部分的写作可按照三个步骤进行，即三步走策略：
首段：提出感谢，简述事由;
中段：具体帮助，自身感受;
尾段：再次感谢，期待回报。

题目要求向孙教授写一封信，感谢他在自己申请耶鲁大学时所给予的推荐。根据上面所提的感谢信写作三步走策略，操作如下：
首段：I would like to convey in this letter my hearty gratitude to you for your recommendation for me. Without your help, I wouldnt have been a postgraduate of Applied Mechanics Department of Yale University.
第一句话直接表明写信目的，即向对方表示衷心的感谢，之后再简要陈述事由，即为了什么事情向对方表示感谢。此句之后，为了让自己的感谢之情表现得更为真诚和强烈，第二句需进行进一步的强调，可用Without your help, I wouldnt have done。
中段：Last June, when I applied for Yale University, you wrote a recommendation letter for me to Professor Washington, the dean of the department. Whats more, you also taught me how to take care of myself and get along with others, which for me are of great significance.
在本段中，若收信人对自己的帮助不止一点，则首先要将其帮助细节进行分条描述，更显逻辑;若收信人所提供的帮助只有一点，则进行具体陈述即可。此外，无论收信人的帮助多或少，写信人都需在具体陈述帮助细节后附加自己的感受或对自己的意义等来进行进一步的深化与阐释，以使自己的感激更为真诚，而不浮夸。
尾段：Thank you again for your kindness and I hope I will have the opportunity to return your charming help.
本段中第一句话再次表达了自己对收信人的感激之情，第二句话表达了自己希望有机会对收信人的帮助做出相应的回报，这样一来，就显得自己的感谢并不仅仅是说说而已。
在考研英语的书信表达中，类似的首段或尾段的套用句式比较丰富，大家需要在复习过程中进行有意的积累，并在写作中加以运用：
